Reminiscent of THE LOVELY BONES, the story is told by sixteen-year-old Finn who struggles to find closure for herself while watching her loved ones do the same. Life is over in an instant for sixteen-year-old Finn Miller when a devastating car accident tumbles her and ten others over the side of a mountain. Suspended between worlds, she watches helplessly as those she loves struggle to survive.
Impossible choices are made, decisions that leave the survivors tormented with grief and regret. Unable to let go, Finn keeps vigil as they struggle to reclaim their shattered lives. Jack, her father, who seeks vengeance against the one person he can blame other than himself; her best friend, Mo, who bravely searches for the truth as the story of their survival is rewritten; her sister Chloe, who knows Finn lingers and yearns to join her; and her mother, Ann, who saved them all but is haunted by her decisions. Finn needs to move on, but how can she with her family still in pieces?
Heartrending yet ultimately redemptive, In an Instant is a story about the power of love, the meaning of family, and carrying on…even when it seems impossible.

…absolutely beautiful and amazing…this is 5 stars, it might be very close to the top of my list of favorite books of the year, and if you have been patiently waiting for this, it will be well worth the wait. I loved all of the moral and ethical questions this book raises. I feel like teens are going to grab onto this book and hold on until the very last page.
…this would be an amazing book club pick
This book had me staying up WAY past my bedtime and reading every given minute I had. Such an incredibly harrowing, emotional, and powerful read. If I could buy 100 copies of this and just give them out to every person I saw, I would. Such a great book.

As I had cried my way through books like If I Stay and movies such as The Lovely Bones and Before I Fall, I thought I was mentally prepared for In An Instant. I wasn't. In An Instant is a persuasive exploration of our true selves; an aftermath of the difficult choices we make following a life-changing moment. I hope this book will help and make an impact on other people the way it did me.

I don't know where to start in this review because I have so many wonderful things to say about this book! In an Instant is going to be one of those books I recommend to everyone to read.
How do we act when nobody is looking? Are we truly "good" people (or bad) all the time? What lies under our self that we show to the world? How would we act toward others if we thought our life, or those we love, was on the line? Would we be an every-man-for-himself person?
There are a hundred layers of questions this story peels away, along with a riveting story of how these people will survive the bitter cold, and even more important, how they will survive emotionally after tragedy.
So much is packed into this book. A MUST for your TBR list!
This book was more heartwrenching than I could have ever imagined. It was full of raw emotion and truth; and the afterword from the author tells us that this story stemmed from a childhood experience. I can’t imagine how hard this was for her to write and relive, but I’m beyond grateful she did. It’s a masterful exploration of death and grief, and I am so honored to have read it.

Grab a box of tissue for this one!! I love that it's from the perspective of a neutral character that can see and interpret the other characters decisions, emotions, and reactions while they thought they were alone. I thought it was a true reflection of human nature in a disaster situation, each helping themselves and those closest to them at the expense of the others.
I sat down with a glass of red and settled in for what I hoped was a good read. That glass of wine turned into three. It was hard to put down…a compelling story of friendship, love, betrayal, and madness. Best book I think I’ve had as an ARC.
Has a similar vibe to The Lovely Bones and I was nowhere near as blown away with that book as I was with this one. I can’t recommend it enough!
If you want a page turner that you will hate to put down, this is your book. Time to hunt down the other books this author has written! I can see us becoming lifelong reading friends.
I rarely give 5 stars but this one is brilliant and I will make sure to let the world know they need to purchase this on release day!
The story is lovingly and expertly crafted - there are a lot of people involved but none seem superfluous. Everything and everyone is stitched together like a crazy quilt - there is a lot going on but it works. Wonderfully.
Redfearn is a novelist and a restauranteur - what an extraordinary combination. The book is presented like a fabulous meal - an appetizer of an opening, a satisfying but multi-layered entree/story, and a satisfying dessert/ending. Yummy. This would be a great book club pick.
An incredible feat of such raw, human emotion. This book gave me a lump in my throat from start to finish and even tears at several points. Even more hard hitting is reading the Author's Note at the end where we find this story is written based upon an experience in her youth and revisiting the forgivenesses she gave when she was a child that looks less deserved as an adult.
A rollercoaster of emotions, this was such a heartbreaking exploration of human character and what happens when given a test you never thought you would need to prepare for.
Redfearn's writing was beautiful and intense. I really felt like I was there feeling everyone's emotions.
I loved this beautiful, sad, tragic, but powerful story.

Amazing book that forces the reader to think about how decisions are affected by tragedy, how people change when faced with their survival, and then how dealing with grief and regret can change the future. Told from the point of view of the ghost of Finn, the story is able to capture multiple viewpoints of each character, and it adds a depth to the story that makes it truly unique. Found myself rooting for the characters and not wanting to put it down until I finished and believing that although life can change in an instant that it can fall back in place too.
I loved this. It was the most compulsively readable book I’ve picked up all year. The story, told from Finn's perspective offered such a wonderful observer feel to this already compelling premise. Trust this book to make you think, rethink, and then think once more about the dynamics of a family and the dynamics of interactions with various people in your life. I could not recommend this book more.
